Proscribe State Terrorism!

My weekly comment column in the daily Plymouth Herald (12.8.25), adding to the widespread outrage at the proscription of Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation. It’s important to get this into print on the day the newspaper carries an article quoting Labour government ministers as saying PA is violent and has “caused significant injury, although cannot give soecific details at this stage”. Liars!

Starmer’s government has re-written the definitions of both terrorism and hypocrisy. At the same time as he announces UK readiness to formally recognise the people of Palestine he is arresting UK citizens protesting against the genocide and eradication of Palestinian people.
Starmer and his apparatchiks have achieved a ground-breaking conjuring trick. Even the greatest circus acts have never managed to ride two horses going in opposite directions at the same time. A completely fresh take on two-faced forked-tongued politics.
Last Saturday, 466 people were arrested in London under Section 13 of the Terrorism Act for silently displaying the following words on white card: “I Oppose Genocide, I support Palestine Action”. The numbers arrested as “terrorists” were predominantly older people, ready to risk their liberty and life opportunities to challenge not only genocide abroad but the affront to democracy at home in the proscription of protest group.
Terrorism has long been understood as the intentional use of violence against non-combatants to achieve political or ideological aims. The term emphasises the aim to instill fear to pursue political goals, and using fear as a strategic tool to influence decision makers.
Non-Violent Direct Action cannot be interpreted thus. Spraying paint on machines of war or factories producing such machines highlights the deadly capacity of the objects whilst not threatening or producing fear in any rational human being. Sitting cross-legged with a hand written paper sheet is not an act of terror. Pointing-out a complete sea-change in State law away from democracy and towards authoritarianism is never illegitimate. This is thoroughly peaceful protest.
Government ministers here and across the world are using the term “genocide” to describe what the Israeli State is doing to over two-million people across the Gaza Strip, and increasingly inside the West Bank – the two regions that comprise Palestine.
Having already killed at least 60,000 Gazans, Israel is inflicting purposeful malnutrition resulting in hundreds of child-deaths, preventing access to potable water, and now about to force the evacuation of one million from central Gaza to crowd together with another 1 million in the South – an open air crowded prison without food, sanitation, much shelter or any utilities.
This is what terrorism actually looks like but on a mass scale. Israel is instilling fear in an entire population in order to pursue political goals – in this case the illegal invasion and colonisation of another land, a people recognised by the United Nations.
The UK, with a history of driving establishment of Israel by force, from the point of the Balfour Treaty in 1919 through to the terrorist establishment of the first Israeli government in 1949, is complicit in today’s terrorism. The UK produces the suicide drones that kill Gazans indiscriminately each day, and supplies the parts that keep the incessant FA32 jet flights across the Gaza Strip to identify targets. These actions produce mass terror in the pursuit of political ends: Greater Israel and the eradication of an entire people.
The overwhelming majority of the countries of the world have condemned Israel’s actions. The millions across Britain who have protested non-stop throughout the past 21 months have forced MPs to question Britain’s actions and demand we “Stop Arming Israel!” But Starmer offers lip-service only to the potential of challenging the far-right Apartheid racist-colonialist Israeli government, whilst arresting those who act on his words. Hypocrite!
We have two priorities, to defend the right to protest at home and demand freedom for Palestine!
Trade unions need to step-up to defend the right to protest in this country. Arrest and proscription of Direct Action places our right to strike for workers rights in serious jeopardy – after all, picket lines and protests outside workplaces are forms of Non-Violent Direct Action! If they come for Peace protesters in the morning, they’ll be calling union activists “terrorist” by nightfall.

Build Climate Action!

We need a Heat Strike! So say the majority of trade unions across Britain and beyond. Employers are failing to recognise the threat from high temperatures to its workforce, politicians have refused to identify a top temperature with stated conditions in which it should be illegal to be forced to work.
The national campaign, Heat Strike, has won huge support from workers everywhere following the third heatwave of the year.
Drivers sat in poor quality commercial cabs have recorded 42 degrees centigrade whilst stuck in traffic. Bus drivers required to manage 9-hour shifts in 32-35C. Cafe kitchens and warehouses, and many small offices and shops, are recording temperatures impossible to function within, employers uncaring and unready to supply any remedial equipment, workers fainting from dehydration.
The UK is not an air-conditioned country. Unlike most of the Western world, our housing and buildings are not built or equipped to ensure comfort or safety during extremes of hot, cold or flash-flooding caused by Climate Change. Our natural environment is in crisis, seasonal dissonance e killing plants and insects.
According to the EU Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), 12 countries and some 790 million people around the world experienced their hottest June ever, Baghdad’s 49C feeling like 65C.. Temperatures were particularly extreme in Europe, 45C in places with two ‘exceptional’ heatwaves. Wildfires are raging, destroying urban areas as well as wildlife, a water-shortage in Hamburg, Germany and Spain’s hottest day ever recorded hitting 46C.
Humans cannot survive for more than a few hours in temperatures over the body temp of 37C at 90% humidity, making it essential for access to cool spaces and liquids.
The Met Office says this is the new normal. Globally, June 2025 was the third-warmest on record, continuing a heat streak in recent years as the planet warms as a result of humanity’s emissions of greenhouse gases. It’s not over, and next year will be hotter still. Europe is warming several times faster than the global average, the sea levels rising around the UK faster than anywhere else, storms and coastal erosion destroying homes. Last winter was the UK’s wettest, with sudden deluges – 2-4 times the average rainfall last September, the cost of water ingress very high.
Heat-related deaths in England and Wales are predicted to rise 50-fold over the next half century if adaptations are minimal. Fatalities will climb six-fold as the planet warms and an ageing population becomes more vulnerable. Add to that the food shortages caused by harvest failures and transport disruption, alongside country-wide water shortages – the result of inadequate investment by profit-hungry private companies – and we cannot continue as we are.
Even the most crazed conspiracy theorists have stopped arguing that Climate Change is a hoax, now saying we have to roll with it or blaming some deep-State contrivance. Climate change is not about belief – t’s a fact. It used to be that only the far-Right and the ignorant argued against tax-investment in climate damage reduction
Yet now, the UK’s Labour government stands alongside USA in cutting investment in adaptations and emissions-reductions to a minimum, investing in more fossil-fuel extraction and use compared with plans laid only a few years ago. We need shaded streets not concrete boulevards, retrofits to millions of homes, increased water storage and energy conservation. We need a National Climate Service to coordinate adaptations, as a matter of extreme urgency.
Whilst all the scientific predictions broadcast by Greta Thunberg’s Youth Strike for Climate have come true, and worse, the campaign clamour for action that peaked back in 2019 has now died down despite evidence of the climate emergency being plain to see. Climate appears not to be an electoral priority.
But the people swept away in flash floods in Texas, USA, last week are a minuscule fraction of the havoc being wreaked right now by the heating of the atmosphere and oceans across the world. Contrary to Trump’s repeated one-in-a hundred-years false propaganda, the Americas are suffering repeated crisis costing their economies trillions of dollars a year. Transnational Finance Corporations, including the world’s biggest bank, JP Morgan Chase, are publishing reports to affiliates identifying huge and immediate threats to “business as usual”.
But businesses are looking for opportunities to make more money rather than invest in safety and slowing-down the chaos: pharmaceuticals can make big money out of malaria spreading through the northern hemisphere; insurance companies can limit liabilities by ending cover for homes on floodplains.
It should be no surprise that bosses don’t care about what happens to us. Corporate government won’t invest in our social infrastructure. The only solution for the working class is to down tools, take strike action to force employers to put in the adaptations we need to survive. Climate is a working class issue. Climate activism must rise again and trade unions have a key role to play! We are launching a Year for Climate Action from September 2025. Join us!

May Day is International Workers Day

It might feel like it, but this is not the start of Summer. Meteorologically, Summer will be welcomed-in on Saturday 21st June. Nevertheless, we’ve always celebrated May Day as a turning point, the days expanding and the trees in leaf again. Phew!

Workers celebrate May 1st for a very different reason. May Day is a celebration of the collective and organised power of the working class. 

For most of us, on every continent since the very start of the system of Capitalism, workers have had little to celebrate, condemned to precarious employment, wage-slavery and gross exploitation.

From the fourteenth century, the rise of a new Capitalist class, mercantilists competing with and largely replacing the ruling Feudal Landlord class, cleared the lands of peasants and herded them, with enforced ethnic-cleansing, into their hurriedly constructed slums and their 14-hour day factories producing the global Industrial Revolution which continues today.

Workers were combined into the Proletariat, the label an acknowledgment of the cruelly stratified system of the ancient Roman Empire within which the proletarii owned little or no property. Proletarian struggle could overthrow imperial governments. That’s why workers’ organisations are continually challenged and forcefully put down by the Capitalist Class who know the history and recognise that we are the many and they are the few. 

The Capitalist class organises, by any means possible, to ensure that workers cannot gain economic, social or political control. Should workers win, the exploitation of Capitalism will be ended, the social conditions of individual competition for private gain at the expense of others finally ended.

On 1st May 1886, workers in the United States of America called a strike for the 8-hour day. Workers across the continent heeded the call, downing tools, refusing to work. The bosses put-down the disputes with great violence, imprisoning and even executing activists. This only produced more opposition and demands for a legislated maximum working day.

By 1890 the international organisation of workers proclaimed May Day as International Workers Day, adopting the workers’ anthem written by French member of the Paris commune, Eugene Pottier: The Internationale, sung every year since across five continents, beginning “Arise Ye Workers from Your Slumber, Arise Ye Prisoners of Want!”

It is worth remembering our heritage, and all the struggles that have been fought at great cost for regulated working hours, health & safety, and decent pay rates. Today, the celebrations across the UK are muted by the effect of decades of direct attack by successive government on worker’s rights, the right to strike and more recent restrictions on the right to protest. 

Much of the gains made by collective trade union actions through the post-war period have been reversed, young people facing precarious employment, a low-wage economy, housing crisis and the return of long working hours and the prospect of never reaching pension-age. 

Most importantly, we support action today against vicious employers. We support the Birmingham “bin workers” striking against pay cuts of £8k a year. We support delivery workers organising for income security.

This week’s celebrations across the UK are muted by the direct attack of successive governments on worker’s rights, the right to strike, and more recent restrictions on the right to protest by Starmer’s Labour government.

Trade unions have been bureaucratised and the notion of collective struggle demonised as if now irrelevant or counter-productive. Yet the central dynamic of Capitalism requires the extraction of surplus value from our labours, into the pockets of employers. That exploitation will always produce fights for workers’ rights. As individuals we are rendered powerless in the workplace, and forced together to support each other’s common need for decent pay and conditions.

Today the global proletariat number more than half of the entire human population. Strikes are happening every day across the world, and often winning. On an international scale, that’s a powerful force if ever brought together. Here in the UK, it’s time to build such collective resistance once again. 

Continued Support for Palestinians is Essential

Last Saturday saw fifty thousand people march to London’s seat of government, Whitehall, on the 25th national demonstration demanding a permanent ceasefire and reparations for the people of Palestine. Millions have marched here, across Britain and indeed the world since Israel invaded the Gaza Strip, home to over two million Palestinians, reducing it to rubble after October 7th 2023.
On that day, Hamas fighters had broken-out of the open-air prison of Gaza and reportedly killed or captured over 1,000 Israelis in nearby territory, land recognised by the United Nations as Palestine and illegally occupied by Israel. 17 months later, at least 50,000 (that’s 50 times the horror of 7.10.23) Gazans are dead, at least 200,000 horrifically injured as living casualties, and one-million-eight-hundred-thousand human beings displaced, homeless, unable to leave and facing disease and starvation.
The disproportionate killing and suffering inflicted by one side on another, happening whether in Gaza or anywhere in the world, should warrant outrage and protest. Trade unions here and everywhere have long recognised the injustice of the treatment of Palestinians since 1948 as immoral and illegitimate.
As part of the trade union quest for social justice we have always exposed and challenged crimes against humanity, our purpose being the political struggle for human rights and equality.
Trade Unions have consistently said Never Again to challenge anti-semitism, remembering and organising against any repeat of the industrial murder of at least six-million Jewish people by Hitler’s fascists in the Second World War.
At the same time, following the formation of Israel by European Jews migrating to the Middle East after the War, we have witnessed this colonisation as the ethnic clearance of Palestinian lands by military force, called in Arabic the Nakba or “catastrophe” ,and we have lobbied for a just solution.
It’s possible to do both. We can commemorate both Holocaust Memorial Day and the Nakba as crimes against humanity. The targeting and mass killing of a specific ethnic group, forcibly removing a people from their homelands or murdering them en masse is unconscionable – racist, predatory and barbaric. For the sake of all, this is not the way humanity should proceed.
Palestine Solidarity groups have been long established across Britain, supported by trade unions. We have never been under greater attack than today. There was a time when almost every Labour Party member supported Palestine but now their Party of Government is shutting down all criticism of the Israeli military. The right to protest for Palestine is being curtailed , Police instructed by politicians to close down the spaces.
At street stalls there is more challenge, supporters of the actions of the Israeli government claiming Palestinians (and indeed Arabs) to be less than human and supporting their “extermination”, up to and including slogans of “nuke ‘em all’. Fascist groups in the UK, caught in the political cleft stick of hatred for both Jews and Muslims, favour Israel at this juncture as if it is a war between Black and White. We observe that the fascist hatred of Jews has not gone away, their theories of a global Jewish conspiracy still everywhere across the Internet.
It is not by accident that Israel has been created at a focal point of geopolitical and financial power, a crossroads of global networks, the precisely constructed centre of the Middle East, funded by Europe and the United States to maintain the power of western imperialism in the Arab World and into the East. Little wonder that Trump, Starmer and the EU states support Israel’s actions and seek to shut-down active criticism. It is about western power and control.
Whilst we, the humanists and socialists of the international workers’ movement, care about and campaign for human rights across the West and in Russia, China, Yemen, India, Sudan, Syria, the Congo and many other examples of human suppression, Palestine overarches all other injustices. The Palestine protests sum-up the international working class struggle against exploitation and oppression.
Some attend the demonstrations for the sense of international solidarity with the oppressed, some argue from a moral wish for peace and reconciliation there and everywhere, some attend as a statement against imperialist domination of peoples and regions. Palestinian protesters amount to a tiny proportion of our mass mostly because there are so few in the UK and they are rarely granted asylum under British law, despite the facts.
Jews across the world are also protesting against the military actions of Prime Minister Netanyahu and the Israeli Defence Forces. Hundreds are occupying Trump Tower in New York demanding the release of Palestinian protester Mahmoud Khalil, a US resident and student now incarcerated and threatened with deportation for peacefully speaking-out for Palestinian rights.
And in Palestine itself the situation is deteriorating faster than ever: the ceasefire talks cancelled; the Israelis once again blocking food aid, cutting of all electricity and therefore essential water and medical services; ethnically cleansing the Palestinian West Bank as now part of “Greater Israel evicting more than 40,000 from their homes; reports of torture and rape of civilians by IDS soldiers; and shooting and bombing civilians crouched amongst the rubble every day.
The size and scale of opposition to the actions of the Israeli State have never been larger nor more profound. The great majority of the world’s countries and people’s support the Palestinians. Historically, those with power always explain their massacres in terms of righteousness. The continuation of that support, especially here in the West, breeds hope, both for the Palestinians and for peace with social justice.

Heat Strikes not Heat Strokes

The ground is drying out at last. Local farmers are sowing and planting, seeking to supply us as well as compensate themselves for the over-winter losses.

We’ve had extreme levels of wet weather, already most of the average annual rainfall by the beginning of May. The soil has been too wet to work without destroying its composition, the winter crops rotting. 

This is just another example of The Change. No-one is honestly denying that Climate Change is with us, even if those wedded to fossil fuels and their private SUV’s want to argue against the cause. 

The speed and scale of change is not natural. Global warming is caused by the massive emission of gases, CO2, nitrous oxide and methane overwhelmingly produced by human methods of production, that trap heat inside the atmosphere causing land and sea to warm and expand, emitting more heat-trapping gases. 

The result is more extreme weather and the extreme shifts between weather patterns. One minute drenching down pours, the next, skin-burning heat. At a global level, deserts may be suddenly flooded, as in Dubai last week, or flood plains quickly turn to dust as in some southern states of the USA. 

The British Isles has seen the wettest winter and spring alongside it being the one of the warmest in record. The global heating creates more evaporation across the Atlantic and that produces more precipitation, rain to fall down on us. It’s going to get warmer but wetter, and most importantly, less predictable.

Nevertheless, every time the sun peers through the increasingly heavy and dark clouds, newspapers will carry front page news proclaiming “What a Scorcher!” with photographs of families lounging on beaches. Rubbish!

The majority of us will be at work, whatever the weather or time of year. And those outside will be at increasing risk of sun burn.

The extremes of weather will produce extremes of temperature, with unprecedented heights of heat waves becoming more frequent in the UK. 

High temperatures can be fatal for many elderly people, infants, disabled people and also workers exposed to heat for long periods.

The lack of health and safety regulations in the UK means that there are laws on working in the cold – minimum workplace temperatures below which you’d can stop work – but no laws on the maximum temperature. 

In recent years, because of global warming, heatwaves across the USA and Europe have led to the deaths of workers either in the outdoors or in extremely hot workplaces – building sites and kitchens are two examples, but glass sided office blocks are just as risky. 

It should be clear that the warming climate and heatwaves are trade union issues. Workers now require protection from extreme weather. 

Here’s some examples. If we are prevented from getting to work by transport disruption, or the workplace is unusable by flooding, our contracts should ensure we still get paid. If the workplace is too hot (much above 22 degrees Celsius) we should be sent home, and if we work from home, the employer should supply the air-conditioning to prevent over-heating. 

Union representatives have to be sitting with employers now to agree “conditions of service” – workplace conditions, that recognise the impacts of extreme or severe weather and protect the workforce. 

And for all the naysayers and climate deniers who consider such health and safety as woke, just look around you. A few years ago every time we had a heatwave people used to go out and sunbathe. Now, we sit in the shade under the trees, where they’re still standing, because the heat is becoming uncomfortable. 

If our employers refuse to invest in safe work conditions we should protect ourselves by joining together and refusing to suffer the discomfort. Instead of risking heat strokes, we should organise heat strikes!

If the debate isn’t based upon Class, it is Fatally Flawed

It is almost as if we are not supposed to speak about class anymore. Yet, whatever social concern is being discussed has to sit within the context of class.

We live in a society and a human world based upon social class. The class we are born into determines most of our life chances and is where we will stay – there has been almost no social mobility over the last 50 years in Britain.

The working class is by far the largest. More than half the world’s population is now reliant upon the income from gainful employment. We are the people required to work for a weekly or monthly or precarious dribs-and-drabs wage. Rather than being forced to work as a slave, we are forced to sell our abilities and hope someone will give us a job as a wage-slave.

Low wages often force us to hold down number of jobs at once, all juggled between domestic care responsibilities and patchy sleep.

In the West, wages for the majority have fallen in terms of real-spending power since 2008, while corporate profits have soared. In the southern states of the USA, wage rates have fallen so far that Chinese companies are moving businesses there to exploit the working classes now cheaper than Chinese workers at home. 

Britain, racing to be the USA’s 51st State is following suit, our social infrastructure betrayed by privatisation is catching-up with the ghetto conditions and collapsed bridges of America.

In challenging all this, trade unions continue to struggle to organise workplaces against exploitation, for decent wages and conditions, workers’ health and safety, and social justice in our communities.

Unions are hated by many. Middle Class property owners despise the notion of human rights that demands responsibilities and liabilities of those with towards those without. Shareholders and corporate executives want to tame or smash unions as every penny extra won for the worker is a penny less for their private profits. And successive governments have created laws limiting trade union activities to a minimum.

Tomorrow, more than one billion workers across the globe will actively celebrate International Workers Day, 1st May.

We will be celebrating the organisations of workers on every continent, combining to prevent unscrupulous employers from gross exploitation, expropriation of our skills and knowledge, profiteering from our hard labour, and oppressing us with unbridled bullying and domination.

Unionised workplaces have better workers’ rights. Unions challenge all forms of discrimination, organise against racism and sexism, for Trans Rights, for the rights of the disabled, and for peace not war. 

We negotiate to protect workers from the threats to life from the deepening climate emergency caused by the careless chaos of capitalist production at the expense of all life on earth.

There has been a backlash that we call a “bosses offensive”, driving down expectations and beating back work-life balance, our younger generations suffering a new intensity of “wage-slavery” and precarious employment, ever fearful of subsistence on treadmill of Universal Credit.

Trade unions here have fought back, and continue to do so with the support of the majority of the population, despite any and every inconvenience caused. 

There is a very crying, painful need for a working class assault against the greed and avarice of the employing class – the real ruling class of this country, pillaging all the essential services. A reunification of shoulder-to-shoulder solidarity across all industries and nations. 

A worker in Britain today has more in common with a worker in Mumbai or Beijing than with any of the politicians in Parliament, the millionaire TV celebrities or the corporate billionaires. 

We celebrate International Workers Day, and organise for peace with social justice.

Plymouth Trades Union Council is celebrating May Day with a festival on Saturday 4th May, marching with banners at midday in the city centre and rallying at the Athenaeum Theatre in the afternoon, with campaign stalls and the free showing of the Ken Loach film, “The Old Oak”.

And every day thereafter, union representatives will be there, organising with and for you. Join a Union!

The Right To Strike is Worth Fighting For!

Tens of thousands of trade unionists will be marching in Cheltenham this Saturday. We are outraged. The cause should be of deep concern to all, even if hardly mentioned in the mainstream media. 

The UK’s Government for the Bosses has created a law that can force people to work against their will. The introduction of the Minimum Service Levels Act effectively undermines the “Right to Strike” – the right to withdraw our labour in collective pursuit of decent pay and treatment at work. 

Workers, such as train drivers or nurses, can be forced by law to go into work whilst being trade union members called into strike action. To defy the Law is to face immediate dismissal and potential prosecution.

To be forced into work is nothing less than slavery. More importantly, it is the end of the democratic human right be a member of trade union. 

After at least fifteen laws restricting and threatening trade union organisation made by successive Conservative governments from the 1980’s onwards, this is the most authoritarian and undemocratic of them all.

Little wonder that the Labour Party has promised to repeal the Act should it become the next government, but we are sceptical unless huge pressure is exhibited by mass protest from below – Blair and Brown did not repeal even one of Thatcher’s anti-union laws.

Indeed, Tony Blair boasted that Britain has the most strict employment laws limiting strike action anywhere across Western Europe. 

Nevertheless, in the wake of last year’s largest levels of strike action in 30 years, strikes continue.

Last week’s national strike by doctors was the longest in the history of the NHS, and more is planned. Doctors have lost over 25% of real pay in the last decade, the majority earning less than tradespeople. They are also profoundly angered by the dilapidation of the NHS they observe everyday.

Next week the train driver’s union, ASLEF, begins the next round of rail strikes, fighting not only for an inflation-rate of pay rise but also against plans for unsafe working conditions. Under this new law, the union is to be held responsible for ensuring a minimum 40% of services are maintained, neutering almost all impact of strike action. 

Teachers in schools and colleges are once again considering strike action, the conditions of our education system quite the worst in three generations. 

All these workers and more are identified by the new law and can be forced into work, all their collective power undermined by maintaining minimum services. Rather than protect the sick, the students’ quality of education or the travelling public, this new Law will simply create even more chaos and disruption. It has to be challenged and defied. 

The attacks on working class conditions and our right to collective organisation are being ramped-up in front of the General Election, asking the question, “which side are you on?”. 

What power have we as workers got, except to join together and stand in defiance of exploitation, oppression and injustice? The right to strike is immutable, and worth fighting for. 

The Trades Union Congress has called the demonstration in Cheltenham in recognition of the 40th Anniversary of the GCHQ strikes against the banning of trade union organisation in that government security agency. Workers were bribed into non-union status and those who refused, sacked. Their union rights were restored in 1997 after a long campaign. 

The lesson must be that we have to fight to win, not only by marching in our thousands on Saturday but taking the fight to the heart of government, by refusing to abide by this unjust law.
